The steel industry endured a challenging 2019. The price of carbon steel spent much of the year dropping, while demand was spotty. The highs of 2018 were a faint memory for many in the supply chain.

Yet ask a steel executive what his biggest worry entering 2020 is and many won’t go to pricing or business activity, a partial nod to cyclical nature of the industry. Instead, the service center operator’s overriding concern is how to fill a current opening, as well as filling the ones to come.

“The biggest issue that continues to face the industry when it comes to hiring and retaining talent is the aging workforce and the industry’s struggle to attract the next generation of talent,” says John Cabal, managing partner of MetalJobs Network.
